Context

The Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2025, released on April 23, 2025, evaluated 853 universities across 35 countries and territories. The assessment was based on 13 performance indicators grouped into five areas: Teaching, Research, Citations, International Outlook, and Industry Income.\

India's Standing

  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, secured the 38th position, maintaining its status as India's top-ranked institution. \
  • Anna University, Chennai, achieved the 111th rank, followed by IIT Indore at 131st.
  • Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences was recognized as India's top private university, ranked at 146th.
  • Other notable Indian institutions in the top 200 include:
    • Mahatma Gandhi University – 140th
    • Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences – 149th
    • Jamia Millia Islamia – 161st
    • IIT Guwahati and KIIT University – both at 184th
    • Aligarh Muslim University and UPES – both at 188th

Trends and Insights

  • Out of the Indian institutions ranked, 14 improved their positions, while 34 saw a decline compared to the previous year.
  • Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, moved into the 201–250 band, showing progress among Institutes of Eminence.
  • The rankings highlight India's growing emphasis on research and international collaboration, though challenges remain in areas like global visibility and industry partnerships.
