White-Collar Hiring

  • In March 2025, India witnessed a strong 38% year-on-year growth in white-collar hiring. This significant rise reflects a notable surge in the demand for white-collar jobs across the country.

Related Facts:

  • White-collar hiring: The hiring of employees for professional, managerial or administrative jobs

Characteristics:

  • The work is intellectually intensive rather than physical labor.
  • Work is usually performed in an office environment.
  • Employees are usually dressed in formal suits — hence the term “white-collar”.
  • Sectors involved are IT, banking, education, administration, consultancy, corporate sector, etc.

State Special

State’s First EMC: Uttar Pradesh

  • The Central Government has approved the establishment of the state’s first Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
  • This center will be developed in Sector 10 of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region, with an investment of approximately ₹539 crore.

Pahalgam Terror Attack

  • India has taken a strong stance against Pakistan and initiated several major actions following the terror attack in Pahalgam.

The following important decisions were taken in the meeting of the Union Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS):

  • Indus Water Treaty (1960) suspended with immediate effect until Pakistan stops supporting cross-border terrorism.
  • Attari border check post closed with immediate effect, citizens who crossed legally can return by 1 May 2025.
  • Visas to Pak nationals under SVES Visa Exemption Scheme stopped, earlier issued visas cancelled, current Pak nationals to leave the country within 48 hours.
  • Defence, Naval and Air Advisors of Pak High Commission in New Delhi declared undesirable, directed to leave the country within 1 week.
  • India has withdrawn its military advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad and reduced staff strength.

TCS Implemented

  • A 1% Tax Collected at Source (TCS) has now been imposed on luxury items priced above ₹10 lakh, including handbags, wristwatches, footwear, sportswear, and other high-end goods.
  • This rule came into effect on 22 April 2025, aiming to track high-value purchases and enhance tax transparency.

Tax Collection at Source (TCS):

  • It is a tax that a seller collects from the buyer at a certain rate at the time of sale of a specified good or service and then deposits it with the Government of India.
  • It is applicable under section 206C of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
  • Example: If a scrap dealer sells scrap worth ₹1,00,000 and the TCS rate is 1%, he will collect ₹1,000 as TCS from the buyer and raise a bill of ₹1,00,000 plus ₹1,01,000. He will later deposit ₹1,000 to the government.

India's Growth Forecast

  • The World Bank has revised India's GDP growth forecast for the fiscal year 2025-26 from 6.7% to 6.3%, indicating a 0.4% decline in the projection.

Domestic Air Passengers in India

  • In March 2025, the number of domestic air passengers in India is estimated to reach 14.88 million, marking an 11.3% increase compared to the same month last year.
  • It also reflects a 5.9% rise over February 2025, which recorded 14.04 million passengers.

Marine-Based Carbon Capture Project

  • The UK government has launched a new marine-based carbon capture project named "SeaCURE", aimed at removing large-scale carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere.
  • The project has been set up at the SEA LIFE Centre in Weymouth, southern England, and is funded by a £3 million grant from the UK government.

Carbon dioxide:

  • It is a greenhouse gas
  • Increase in CO₂ emissions increases the earth's temperature, which leads to climate change
  • Chemical formula: CO₂
  • Its sublimation boiling point is 70°C and vapour density is 1.53
  • Structure: It has one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. It is a simple chemical compound

T. Ravi Shankar

  • The Government of India has extended the term of T. Ravi Shankar, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), for another year. He will now remain in the position until May 2026.
  • This marks his second consecutive one-year extension. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) issued an order on 21 April 2025, approving his reappointment for one year, effective from 3 May 2025 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

National Panchayati Raj Day

  • National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated annually on 24 April in India. This day commemorates the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1993, which granted constitutional recognition to the three-tier Panchayati Raj system in India.

History of Panchayati Raj System :

  • Preliminary Background: The concept of Panchayati Raj in India has existed since ancient times, where village assemblies played an important role in local administration.
  • Balwantrai Mehta Committee (1957): The Government of India constituted the Balwantrai Mehta Committee in 1957, which recommended a three-tier Panchayati Raj system (village, block, district).
  • 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act (1992): Through this Act, Panchayati Raj institutions got constitutional status and the Act came into force on 24 April 1993.
