Insurance Coverage through GeM in FY 2024-25

Reference :

  • Government e-Marketplace (GeM), a leading digital public procurement platform, provided insurance coverage to over 1.3 crore (13 million) individuals in the services sector during FY 2024-25.
  • During the same period, GeM also facilitated employment for more than 10 lakh (1 million) people through its platform.
  • The insurance services category, launched in January 2022, aimed to make the procurement of insurance services more transparent, competitive, and cost-effective within the government purchasing ecosystem.
  • Only service providers approved by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) are listed on GeM, ensuring a reliable and credible platform for insurance services.
  • Through GeM, government institutions can now directly procure insurance services like Group Mediclaim, Term Insurance, and Personal Accident Coverage via simplified processes.
  • This has led to streamlined procurement procedures, reduced premium costs, and timely service delivery.

Government e-Marketplace (GeM) : 

Introduction:

  • GeM is an online platform developed by the Government of India with the aim to bring transparency, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness to public procurement.
  • Launch Year: 2016

Key Objectives:

    • To ensure transparency in the procurement of goods and services by government departments.
    • To digitize the procurement process and save time.
    • To reduce corruption and enable competitive pricing.
  • Ministry Involved: Ministry of Commerce and Industry

Development and Support:

Developed by the Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D) with support from the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under MeitY.

Legal Authorization:

  • Authorized under Rule 149 of the General Financial Rules (GFR), 2017

Governing Notification:

  • Included under the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961

Major Achievements of GeM in FY 2024-25:

  • Before the completion of FY 2024-25, GeM surpassed a Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of ₹5 lakh crore, marking a major milestone.
  • As of 13 February 2025, GeM had successfully onboarded over 29,000 startups and 1.8 lakh (180,000) DPIIT-verified women-led businesses, promoting greater inclusivity and economic empowerment.
  • With a firm commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility, GeM facilitated cumulative public savings of over ₹1,15,000 crore.
  • There are over 1.6 lakh (160,000) registered government buyers on the platform, including central and state ministries, departments, public sector undertakings (PSUs), panchayats, and cooperatives, all promoting digital procurement at every level of governance.
