Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025

  • The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, passed by both Houses of Parliament during the Budget Session, has received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu.
  • With the issuance of the Gazette Notification in this regard, the name of the Waqf Act, 1995 has also been changed to the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMMEED) Act, 1995.

Agreement on Defence Cooperation between India and Sri Lanka

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo, aimed at strengthening the strategic and developmental partnership between the two nations.
  • In the presence of both leaders, several agreements were signed across various sectors, including defence and energy.

BIMSTEC Chairmanship

  • Bangladesh assumed the chairmanship of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) for the next two years on April 4, 2025, during the 6th BIMSTEC Summit held in Bangkok.
  • After receiving the chairmanship from the Prime Minister of Thailand, Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus emphasized the need for an inclusive and action-oriented BIMSTEC.

  • Full name: Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation
  • Foundation: Bangkok Declaration in June 1997

New ₹10 and ₹500 Currency Notes

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon issue new ₹10 and ₹500 banknotes under the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.
  • These new notes will bear the signature of Governor Sanjay Malhotra.

Recession Warning in the United States

  • Taking into account the impact of the reciprocal tariffs announced by the Donald Trump administration, global brokerage houses and economists have issued a warning of a possible recession in the United States.

Amrit Kalash Fixed Deposit Scheme

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) has discontinued its Amrit Kalash Fixed Deposit (FD) Scheme.
  • This scheme had a tenure of 400 days, and the last date to invest was 31st March 2025. It has been withdrawn with effect from 1st April 2025.

Agreement between BPCL and MEAL

  • Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Mahindra Electric Automobile Limited (MEAL) have announced a new partnership to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience.

  • Indian boxer Abhinash Jamwal has entered the final of the men’s 65 kg weight category at the 2025 World Boxing Cup, held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil.
  • He defeated Italy’s Gianluigi Malanga with a dominant 5-0 win in the semifinal. Abhinash will face Brazil’s Yuri Reis in the final.

  • The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released the 26th edition of its publication titled "Women and Men in India 2024: Trend Indicators and Data".

Discovery of the Historic Ramesseum Temple, Tombs, and Structures

  • According to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, an Egyptian-French archaeological mission has discovered the historic Ramesseum Temple, along with tombs and structures in the southern city of Luxor.
  • The team has uncovered a group of tombs dating back to the Third Intermediate Period (around 1069–525 BCE), and also storage areas for olive oil and honey near the temple.

Madhavpur Ghed Fair

  • The five-day Madhavpur Ghed Fair has commenced in Madhavpur, located in Porbandar district of Gujarat.
  • This fair is held every year as a symbolic celebration of the divine union of Lord Dwarkadhish Shri Krishna and Rukmini.

Madhavpur Mela is associated with the Mishmi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. This fair connects the cultures of Western and North-East India.
