Permission to Terminate 26-Week Pregnancy

- On March 31, 2025, the Bombay High Court made a significant ruling, granting permission to a 32-year-old woman to terminate her 26-week pregnancy. This permission was granted based on medical discrepancies found in the fetus.
Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act:
- Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act of 1971 in India, abortion can be performed without any special permission up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
- However, between 20 to 24 weeks, it can only be carried out under specific circumstances, following approval from a panel of doctors.
- For pregnancies exceeding 24 weeks, court permission is required to terminate the pregnancy.
