Operation Brahma

  • The Government of India sent 15 tons of relief material to the people of Myanmar affected by a devastating earthquake under Operation Brahma.
  • On March 28, 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand, causing massive destruction. At least 1,002 people were killed, and over 2,400 people were injured.

Indian Ports Bill, 2025

  • The Indian Ports Bill, 2025 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 28, 2025.
  • Its primary objective is to strengthen port-related laws in India and promote integrated port development.

  • Effective Management of Ports: The Bill aims to establish State Maritime Boards for effective management of ports other than major ports.
  • The Bill seeks to promote ease of doing business

2025 Likely to Be the Hottest Year for India

  • On March 28, 2025, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that 2025 could be the hottest year for India.
  • According to meteorologists, if the number of heatwave days doubles, it could lead to a further rise in temperature.

Heatwave:

 

 

  • A condition of severely high temperatures that are above the normal average and persist for several consecutive days.
  • In India, a heatwave is declared when the temperature exceeds 4.5°C to 6.4°C above normal.

Kosi-Mechi Interstate Link Project

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by PM Narendra Modi, approved the inclusion of the Kosi-Mechi Interstate Link Project in Bihar under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (PMKSY-AIBP).

The project aims to:

 

 

  • Transfer surplus water of Koshi river to Mechi river, thereby expanding irrigation facilities in four districts of Seemanchal region—Purnia, Katihar, Kishanganj and Araria.
  • This will provide irrigation benefits to about 2.15 lakh hectares of agricultural land during the Kharif season, thereby increasing the agricultural productivity of the region.

Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme

  • The Central Government approved the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme worth ₹22,919 crore to make India's electronics supply chain self-reliant.
  • The scheme was approved during the Union Cabinet meeting on March 28, 2025, aiming to boost the production of electronic components in the country.

Nutrient-Based Subsidy (NBS) on Fertilizers

  • On March 28, 2025, the Central Government approved the Nutrient-Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilizers for the kharif season.
  • Under this decision, the government proposed a subsidy of ₹37,216.15 crore, which will be applicable from April 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025.

  • Phosphorus (P) – Rs 43.60 per kg
  • Potash (K) – Rs 2.38 per kg

Dearness Allowance (DA) for Central Government Employees

  • On March 28, 2025, the Union Cabinet approved a 2% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees.
  • With this increase, the DA will rise from 53% to 55% under the 7th Pay Commission.

  • After this new hike, if an employee's basic salary is Rs 50,000, his dearness allowance will increase from Rs 26,500 to Rs 27,500, which will increase his salary by Rs 1,000
  • This hike will be considered effective from January 1, 2025
  • The government has also constituted the Eighth Pay Commission, whose recommendations are expected to be implemented from January 2026

Bilateral Naval Exercise "Indra 2025"

  • India and Russia began a six-day bilateral naval exercise called "Indra 2025" off the coast of Chennai from 28 March to 2 April 2025.
  • The Russian Navy ships include Pechanga, Rezkiy, and Aldar Tsydenzhapov, while from the Indian Navy side, INS Rana, INS Kuthar, and P-81 maritime patrol aircraft are participating.

Format of the exercise:

 

  • Harbour Phase (March 28-30): It includes activities such as opening ceremony, technical exchanges among experts, sports competitions, and pre-war briefing
  • Sea Phase (March 31 – April 2): It will include activities such as advanced naval exercises, live firing, anti-air operations, and helicopter cross-deck landing

ATM Withdrawal Charges

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the maximum ATM withdrawal fee to ₹23 from May 1, 2025.
