Project Review by DPIIT's PMG

  • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), through its Project Monitoring Group (PMG), conducted a comprehensive review of major infrastructure projects in Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha.

Increase in MPs' Monthly Salary

  • The Central Government has increased the salary, allowances, and pension of Members of Parliament (MPs) by 24%, effective from April 1, 2023.
  • According to the gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, the monthly salary of MPs has been raised from ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,24,000. Additionally, the daily allowance has been increased from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.

  • The pension of former MPs has also been increased. Their monthly pension has been raised from ₹25,000 to ₹31,000.
  • The additional pension for more than five years of service has been increased from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.

₹364 Crore Distributed to Handloom Workers

  • The Central Government has released over ₹364 crore during the current financial year for schemes benefiting handloom workers across the country.

  • ₹192.06 crore has been released for the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP).
  • ₹171.98 crore has been distributed under the Raw Material Supply Scheme for handloom workers.
  • Financial assistance of ₹8,000 per month is provided to award-winning handloom workers aged 60 years or above.
  • According to the 4th All India Handloom Census (2019-20), there are 35,22,512 handloom weavers/workers across the country, including 1,690 in Puducherry.

Achievement under Jal Jeevan Mission

  • The Government of India has ensured tap water supply in around 89% of schools and 85% of anganwadis across the country under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

  • The Jal Jeevan Mission was launched in August 2019 with the aim of providing safe and adequate drinking water through tap connections to every rural household by 2024.
  • At the time of launch, only 3.23 crore (16.7%) rural households had tap water connections.

Special Scheme for Religious Tourism: Uttarakhand

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced special schemes to promote religious tourism along the Ganga and Sharda rivers.
  • Under this scheme, corridors will be developed along these sacred rivers, highlighting their religious and cultural significance.

Launch of "Let's Study" Campaign

  • Women activists in Afghanistan have launched the "Let's Study" campaign against the four-year ban on girls' education.
  • Under Taliban rule, girls have been denied secondary and higher education, leaving around 4 lakh girls out of school at the start of this academic year.

Noma Included in the List of Neglected Tropical Diseases

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) officially included Noma in the list of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) on December 15, 2023.

  • Noma, also known as Cancrum Oris or Gangrenous Stomatitis, is a rapidly progressing and often fatal gangrenous infection of the mouth and face, with a 90% mortality rate.
  • It typically begins as an ulcer on the gums and quickly spreads to the jawbone, cheeks, and soft tissues of the face.
  • Noma is treatable, but it can be fatal if not detected early.

Other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs):

  • Scabies, snakebite envenoming, yaws, trachoma, leishmaniasis, and Chagas disease, among others, are also classified as NTDs.

"Make in India" Initiative

  • India has recorded the highest ever increase in indigenous defence production in the financial year 2023-24 under the "Make in India" initiative.

Export Duty: Onion

  • According to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, there will be no export duty on onion exports. This move aims to ensure that Indian farmers can export onions to global markets without any duty, enabling them to receive better prices and profitable returns.

Africa-India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME)

  • The Indian Navy is set to participate in a large-scale multilateral maritime exercise called "Africa-India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME)".
  • The exercise will be held off the coast of Tanzania from April 13 to 18, 2025, involving the navies of India and 10 African countries.

  • Objective: To develop collective naval strength to tackle common challenges such as piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing.

"Rang-De-Gulaal" Exhibition

  • The Dubai International Art Centre is currently hosting the "Rang-De-Gulaal" exhibition, celebrating India's diverse folk art traditions.
