National News

Standing Committee on Voluntary Agencies – 34th Meeting

  • Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh, chaired the 34th meeting of the Standing Committee on Voluntary Agencies (SCOVA) in New Delhi on March 11, 2025.
  • Pensioners' welfare associations from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Gujarat will participate in the 34th SCOVA meeting.

Related Facts:

  • SCOVA (Standing Committee on Voluntary Agencies) was established in 1986 by the Department of Pension & Pensioners' Welfare with the objective of facilitating dialogue between pensioners' welfare associations and government ministries/departments.
  • SCOVA has 15 non-official members.

Parliamentary Question

  • The Government of India is implementing various schemes and programs to strengthen irrigation facilities in the agricultural sector. One of the key initiatives is the "Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana" (PMKSY), which aims to ensure "Har Khet Ko Pani" (Water for Every Field) and promote the efficient management of water resources.

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY):

  • Launched: 2015
  • Objective: To ensure “Har Khet Ko Pani” and efficient management of water resources

Key Components:

  • Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP): To complete pending irrigation projects

Parliamentary Question: Decline in Groundwater Levels

  • The decline in groundwater levels in India is a serious concern, and both the central and state governments are working together to address this issue through various measures.

Key Steps Taken by the Government:

 

  • Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA): Launched in 2019, this campaign aims to promote rainwater harvesting and water conservation activities.
  • 'Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari' Initiative: Launched by the Prime Minister on September 6, 2024, in Surat, Gujarat, this initiative focuses on ensuring the conservation of every drop of water through collective efforts.
  • Jal Shakti Kendras (JSK): Established in various districts across the country with active community participation to strengthen water resource management.

Unorganized Workers Registered on the e-Shram Portal

  • As of March 3, 2025, the number of unorganized workers registered on the e-Shram Portal has surpassed 30.68 crore.
  • Out of these, 53.68% are women, accounting for approximately 16.47 crore, while the number of male workers stands at around 14.21 crore.

Rail Amendment Bill Passed in Rajya Sabha

  • On March 10, 2025, the Rajya Sabha unanimously passed the Rail (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which had earlier been approved by the Lok Sabha on December 11, 2024.

  • The bill integrates the Indian Railway Board Act of 1905 and the Railways Act of 1989 into a unified framework.

Recent Achievements of Indian Railways:

  • 34,000 kilometers of new railway tracks have been laid in the past 11 years.
  • Over 45,000 kilometers of railway tracks have been electrified.
  • 91% reduction in railway accidents, with the number of fog safety devices increasing from 90 to 26,000.
  • A plan has been introduced to construct waiting halls at 60 major stations for better crowd management.

Women Employees in Indian Railways Workforce

  • According to official data, women employees currently constitute 8.2% of the total workforce in Indian Railways, an increase from 6.6% in 2014.

Major roles of women employees:

 

 

  • Loco pilot: Currently 2,162 women are employed in this role, while 10 years ago this number was about 371, which shows a five-fold increase.
  • Train manager (guard): 794 women are employed in this position
  • Station master: 1,699 women are employed in this role, which shows a nearly five-fold increase in the last decade
  • Office staff: 12,362 women are engaged in administrative work
  • Supervisor: 2,360 women are employed in this position
  • Trackman: 7,756 women are contributing to track maintenance
  • Ticket checker: 4,446 women are employed in this role

State Special

Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Wheat in Uttar Pradesh

  • The Uttar Pradesh government has increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat by ₹150, setting it at ₹2,425 per quintal. This is an increase from last year's ₹2,275 per quintal.

Procurement Process:

  • Duration: 17 March 2025 to 15 June 2025.
  • Procurement Centres: 6,500 procurement centres will be set up across the state

Savitribai Phule
