National News

Inauguration of Vanatara

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vantara Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Conservation Centre in Gujarat.
  • Vantara is home to over 2,000 species and more than 1.5 lakh rescued, endangered, and threatened animals.

National Level Major Wildlife Conservation Projects:

  • Project Tiger -1973: To increase the declining population of tigers and ensure their conservation.
  • Project Elephant -1992 : To protect the natural habitat of elephants and reduce human-elephant conflict.
  • Project Snow Leopard - 2009 : Focused on the conservation of snow leopards and the protection of their habitats.
  • Project Dolphin - 2020 : To increase the population of Ganges and marine dolphins.
  • Project Cheetah - 2022 : To reintroduce cheetahs in India by bringing them from Namibia and South Africa.

Launch of Women-Friendly Gram Panchayats

  • With the aim of promoting gender equality at the grassroots level, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj launched the Model Women-Friendly Gram Panchayats (MWFGP) on March 5, 2025.

Panchayati Raj System:

  • Constitutional Status: Under the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992.
  • Key Provisions: Mentioned in Part IX of the Indian Constitution, covering Articles 243 to 243-O.
  • Reservation for Women: Article 243D of the Constitution provides for the reservation of seats for women in Panchayats.
  • Reservation Percentage: 33% (1/3) of the seats in Panchayats are reserved for women.

Launch of the Empowered Panchayat-Leader Campaign

  • The Ministry of Panchayati Raj launched the Empowered Panchayat-Leader Campaign during a historic national workshop of women elected representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions in New Delhi.

International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day

  • Observed annually on March 5, the International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day aims to promote greater awareness and understanding of disarmament issues, especially among the youth.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated March 5 as this awareness day through a resolution adopted on December 7, 2022.

Launch of Bamboo Plantation

  • As part of efforts to improve the environment and control pollution, bamboo plantation has been initiated in Delhi.

Bamboo :

  • It is a fast growing grass species plant
  • Scientific name: Bambuseae (Poaceae family)
  • Family: Poaceae
  • Origin: Mainly Asia, South America and Africa
  • Key features: Fast growth, clean environment, soil conservation, multipurpose use
  • Top producing countries: China > India
  • In October 2006, the Government of India launched the National Bamboo Mission (NBM) based on the National Bamboo Technology and Trade Development Report, 2003.
  • Bamboo has been declared a non-forest product

Mukhyamantri Ekal Mahila Swarozgar Yojana

  • The Uttarakhand government has approved the "Mukhyamantri Ekal Mahila Swarozgar Yojana" to empower single women. Under this scheme, financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh will be provided.

Related Facts:

 

  • Beneficiaries will receive 75% of the total cost as a grant, while they will have to contribute only 25% themselves.
  • In the first phase, the scheme aims to benefit 2,000 women, promoting their financial independence and self-reliance.

International News

800 Billion Euro Proposal

  • The European Union (EU) leader has proposed a plan worth 800 billion euros (841 billion US dollars).

 

 

  • This includes the European Union taking a loan of 150 billion euros for defense.
  • The proposal aims to increase the EU's defense spending to 1.5% of GDP, potentially creating a fiscal space of 650 billion euros.

Green Light for Hydrogen Truck Trials

  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, flagged off the trial of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks manufactured by Tata Motors.
  • This trial is being conducted under the National Green Hydrogen Mission in collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and will involve 16 hydrogen trucks.
  • Net-Zero Emissions: The total amount of greenhouse gases emitted by a country should be equal to what can be absorbed from the atmosphere, making the net emissions zero.
  • India's Net-Zero Emissions Target: 2070
  • Announced: By Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at COP26

Five Pilot Projects Launched

  • In a push to promote the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the central government has launched five pilot projects for the use of hydrogen in buses and trucks.
  • These projects include a total of 37 hydrogen-fuelled vehicles, including 15 hydrogen fuel cell-based vehicles and 22 hydrogen engine vehicles. These vehicles will be run for testing on 10 different routes across the country.

  • Implementing Agencies: These projects have been assigned to leading companies like Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, ANERT, Ashok Leyland, HPCL, BPCL and IOCL.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission was launched on January 4, 2023 with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore by FY 2029-30.

Electricity Consumption in February

  • India's electricity consumption in February increased to 131.54 billion units, compared to 127.34 billion units during the same period last year.
  • To meet the high demand, the peak power supply in February reached 238.14 GW in a single day, up from 222 GW in February 2024.

India's Circular Economy

  • Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, while addressing the 12th Regional 3R and Circular Economy Forum for India and the Pacific region, stated that India's circular economy could create a market worth over $2 trillion and generate around 10 million jobs by 2050.
  • Globally, the circular economy has the potential to generate an additional economic output of $4.5 trillion by 2030.

Increase in NMDC’s Iron Ore Production

  • National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) recorded a 17.85% increase in iron ore production in February 2025, reaching 4.62 million tons, compared to 3.92 million tons in the same month last year.
  • However, the company's iron ore sales slightly declined to 3.98 million tons in February 2025, compared to 3.99 million tons in February 2024.

  • As of February 2025, NMDC's cumulative production reached 40.49 million tons, reflecting a marginal increase of 0.62% compared to the same period last year.
  • The cumulative sales for the same period stood at 40.20 million tons, showing a slight decline of 0.69% from the previous year.

  • Indian Navy warship 'INS Kuthar' has arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with the objective of strengthening maritime ties between India and Sri Lanka.
