Green Transition Alliance India (GTAI)

Context:

  • Denmark and India have announced the Green Transition Alliance India (GTAI) to strengthen cooperation on sustainable energy solutions.
  • This initiative aims to create an ecosystem that fosters collaboration among businesses, government bodies, research institutions, and financial stakeholders from both countries, promoting sustainable energy development in India.

Key Features of GTAI:

  • Several major Danish companies are joining GTAI as members, including Grundfos, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Better, Novonesis, MASH Makes, Rockwool, and A.P. Møller-Mærsk.
  • Strategic partners include the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Indo-Danish Chamber of Commerce (IDCC), Confederation of Danish Industry (DI), and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Energy Consortium.
  • This announcement comes at a time when India is accelerating its efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, while Denmark aims to reach net-zero by 2045.

Objectives and Scope of GTAI:

  • GTAI is a key initiative under the Green Strategic Partnership (GSP) signed in 2020, aiming to support India and Denmark in achieving their climate goals.
  • The alliance is inspired by the success of Green Fuels Alliance India (GFAI) and Wind Alliance India (WAI).

GTAI Working Groups:

GTAI will serve as an integrated platform with three key working groups:

  • 1. Renewable Energy
  • 2. Green Fuels
  • 3. Energy Efficiency

India-Denmark Relations:

  • Diplomatic relations between India and Denmark were established in September 1949.
  • Historical Background:
    • Denmark established a trading post in Tranquebar (present-day Tharangambadi, Tamil Nadu) in 1620.
    • This was part of the Danish East India Company, which laid the foundation for India-Denmark trade relations.
    • After India’s independence, formal diplomatic ties were established in September 1949.
