Disaster of “severe nature”

  • Central government has declared the devastating Wayanad landslides that occurred on 30th July in Kerala a disaster of “severe nature,”.

Disaster Management (DM) Act, 2005

 

 

  • The DM Act was enacted in the wake of the 1999 Orissa super-cyclone and the 2004 tsunami.
  • It defines a disaster as a “catastrophe, mishap, calamity or grave occurrence” arising from “natural or man-made causes” that results in substantial loss of life, destruction of property, or damage to the environment.
  • Notified Disasters: Cyclones, Drought, Earthquake, Fire, Flood, Tsunami, Hailstorm, Landslide, Avalanche, Cloudburst, Pest Attack, and frost and cold waves.

Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana

  • Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal launched the "Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana" from the Hanuman Temple at Connaught Place, under which priests of temples and the 'granthis' of the Gurudwara will receive an honorarium of about Rs 18,000 per month.

SpaDeX

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission, that would aid in demonstration of space docking lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
  • PSLV-C60 successfully deployed two satellites SDX01 (the Chaser) and SDX02 (the Target) in low earth orbit.
  • India becomes the fourth nation to achieve space docking with indigenous system.
