SA declared food-borne illnesses a national disaster

  • South Africa (SA) has declared food-borne illnesses a national disaster after a surge in cases caused dozens of child deaths and hospitalised hundreds.
Foodborne illnesses are caused by eating contaminated food or beverages. They can be caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, toxins, metals, and prions.

India's first modern, self-sufficient gaushala with a state-of-the-art CBG Plant

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first modern, self-sufficient gaushala with a state-of-the-art Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.

  • Biogas is produced from waste / biomass sources (e.g., agricultural residue, cattle dung, sugarcane press mud, municipal solid waste, and sewage treatment plant waste) through the process of anaerobic decomposition.
  • Asia's largest CBG plant was inaugurated in Punjab's Sangrur.
  • SATAT’ (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) Scheme on Compressed Biogas (CBG) was launched on 1st Oct 2018 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

New Method to detect Monkeypox by JNCASR

  • Scientists from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) have discovered a new method to detect Monkeypox by identifying and analysing DNA sequences in the virus genome.

  • First human case reported was a nine-month-old boy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1970.
