Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act, 2004

  • The Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act, 2004, overturning the Allahabad High Court’s ruling that declared the Act “unconstitutional” and against secularism. 
  • The Supreme Court held the Madarsa Education Act “unconstitutional” to the extent it regulates higher education in relation to ‘fazil’ and ‘kamil’ degrees granted by Madrasas beyond class XII for being in conflict with the UGC Act.

Material Resources of the Community

 

  • The Supreme Court, in an 8:1 majority ruling led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, held that not all private properties are part of the “material resources of the community” for State redistribution under Article 39(b). However, it noted that some private properties could qualify if they hold significant community value.

(a) that the citizens, men and women equally, have the right to an adequate means of livelihood;

(b) that the ownership and control of the material resources of the community are so distributed as best to subserve the common good;

(c) that the operation of the economic system does not result in the concentration of wealth and means of production to the common detriment;

(d) that there is equal pay for equal work for both men and women;

(e) that the health and strength of workers, men and women, and the tender age of children are not abused and that citizens are not forced by economic necessity to enter avocations unsuited to their age or strength;

(f) that children are given opportunities and facilities to develop in a healthy manner and in conditions of freedom and dignity and that childhood and youth are protected against exploitation and against moral and material abandonment. 

15-day ‘Jal Utsav’

 

  • NITI Aayog launched a 15-day ‘Jal Utsav’ from 6th to 24th November in 20 Aspirational Districts and Blocks to promote water management and conservation, in collaboration with the National Jal Jeevan Mission and the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

Contract Farming Agreements

 

  • For the first time, the government has entered into contract farming agreements with farmers in states like Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Gujarat to cultivate pulses (tur and masoor) on 1,500 hectares of farmland.
Based on the production estimates for the year 2022-23, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan are the top three pulses producing states in the country.

Protein IL-35

 

  • Researchers have discovered that the protein IL-35 protects the immune system by reducing immune cells that produce inflammatory chemicals, thereby lowering pancreatic cell infiltration, a major factor in type 1 and autoimmune diabetes.
The basic unit of protein is the amino acid. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the animal kingdom.

  • The World Solar Market Report revealed exceptional solar growth, with global capacity soaring from 1.22 GW in 2000 to 1,418.97 GW in 2023.Solar jobs have surged to 7.1 million, and global capacity may reach 7,203 GW by 2030.
  • The World Investment Report highlighted a global shift toward sustainable energy, with energy investments rising from $2.4 trillion in 2018 to $3.1 trillion by 2024.  
  • The World Technology Report highlights include record-setting 24.9% efficiency in solar PV modules, an 88% reduction in silicon usage since 2004, and a 90% drop in utility-scale solar PV costs.
