National News

SC ended practice of caste-based discrimination in prisons

  • The Supreme Court ended the longstanding practice of caste-based discrimination in prisons, declaring provisions in various jail manuals “unconstitutional” for violating inmates' rights to dignity, equality, and non-discrimination.

New Classical Languages

  • The Union Cabinet approved classical language status for Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, Pali, and Prakrit
  • Initial 6 classical languages:  Tamil (2004), Telugu (2008), Malayalam (2013), Kannada (2008), Sanskrit (2005),Odia (2014).
  • Tamil was the first language to be given classical status in 2004 followed by Sanskrit in 2005.

Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme

  • The Government launched the pilot project of the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme, announced in the 2024-25 Union Budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Aim: To provide internships to 1 crore youth in the top 500 companies over five years.

NMEO-Oilseeds

  • The Government approved the National Mission on Edible Oils and Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds) for 2024-31, with a budget of ₹10,103 crore, aiming to make India self-reliant in oilseed production within seven years.

National Mission for Edible Oils - Oil Palm (NMEO-OP)

  • Launched: August 2021
  • Targets a substantial increase in oil palm cultivation and crude palm oil production.
  • Centrally Sponsored Scheme with a special focus on the North east region and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

PM-RKVY and KY

  • The Union Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) for sustainable agriculture and Krishonnati Yojana (KY) for food security, with a combined budget of over ₹1 lakh crore.

PM-RKVY comprises of the following schemes:

  • Rainfed Area Development
  • AgroForestry
  • Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana
  • Per Drop More Crop
  • Crop Diversification Programme

Major Projects approved by Cabinet

  • The Union Cabinet approved a 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus for over 11.72 lakh railway employees.
  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, approved modifications to the Productivity Linked Reward (PLR) Scheme for major ports and dock labour employees from 2020-21 to 2025-26.

Registration of pregnant women in the unorganised sector
