QUAD Leaders’ Summit

Context

  • India and the US have swapped hosting of the Quad Summit and decided to hold this year's summit in Delaware (USA), the hometown of US President Joseph Biden. 

QUAD

  • QUAD stands for 'Quadrilateral Security Dialogue'. It is an informal group consisting of four countries: India, Australia, Japan and the United States.
  • Objective: To promote peace, security and openness in the Indo-Pacific region

Other objectives:

  • Countering China's growing influence.
  • Ensuring maritime security and free navigation.
  • Promoting economic cooperation and development.
  • Promoting cyber security and technological cooperation.

QUAD’ History

1968 Japan and the United States began a joint maritime exercise.
1970 Australia was included in the exercise.
2007 India was also included and the Quad was formed (this was put on hold as Australia withdrew under pressure from China.)
2012 The idea of ​​establishing a ‘Democratic Security Diamond’ comprising Australia, India, Japan and the United States to ensure maritime security from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean was mooted by then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
2017 The Quad was revived and began playing a more active role.
2021 First Quad Leaders’ Summit, virtually (Hosted by: US President Joe Biden)
