QUAD Leaders’ Summit

Context
- India and the US have swapped hosting of the Quad Summit and decided to hold this year's summit in Delaware (USA), the hometown of US President Joseph Biden.
QUAD
- QUAD stands for 'Quadrilateral Security Dialogue'. It is an informal group consisting of four countries: India, Australia, Japan and the United States.
- Objective: To promote peace, security and openness in the Indo-Pacific region
Other objectives:
- Countering China's growing influence.
- Ensuring maritime security and free navigation.
- Promoting economic cooperation and development.
- Promoting cyber security and technological cooperation.
QUAD’ History
| 1968 | Japan and the United States began a joint maritime exercise. |
| 1970 | Australia was included in the exercise. |
| 2007 | India was also included and the Quad was formed (this was put on hold as Australia withdrew under pressure from China.) |
| 2012 | The idea of establishing a ‘Democratic Security Diamond’ comprising Australia, India, Japan and the United States to ensure maritime security from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean was mooted by then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. |
| 2017 | The Quad was revived and began playing a more active role. |
| 2021 | First Quad Leaders’ Summit, virtually (Hosted by: US President Joe Biden) |
Benefits for India:
- Security and strategic cooperation: India gets security and strategic cooperation through the Quad.
- Economic opportunities: Economic relations with the member countries of the Quad are promoted.
- Technical cooperation: Through the Quad, India also gets technical cooperation from developed countries like Japan and America.
- Strategic influence: India's strategic influence also increases through the Quad.
