Pradhan Mantri Mudra Scheme (PMMY)

Context

Non-performing assets (NPAs) linked to Mudra loans given by public sector banks have declined in the current fiscal year.

NPA on Mudra loans is expected to decline to 3.4% in 2023-24 from 4.77% in 2020-21, 4.89% in 2019-20 and 3.76% in 2018-19.

PMMY:

Commencement: April 8, 2015

Main objective: To provide collateral-free institutional credit to small enterprises

Financing: Lending institutions include scheduled commercial banks (SCBs), regional rural banks (RRBs), non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and microfinance institutions (MFIs).

Loans can be used for various purposes.

There are three types of loans given

Shishu Loan Up to Rs 50,000
Kishore Loan Rs 50,001 to Rs 5 lakh
Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh
In Budget 2024-25, the limit of Mudra loans under the ‘Tarun’ category has been increased from the existing Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.
