National

ATCM-46 & CEP-26

  • India successfully concluded hosting of the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM-46) and the 26th Committee on Environmental Protection (CEP-26) in Kochi, Kerala.
  • ATCM-46 and CEP-26 were hosted by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, through the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, with support from the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat headquartered in Argentina.
  • ATCM-46 was held with the overarching theme of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, a Sanskrit phrase that means one Earth, one family, one future.

Shangri-La Dialogue

  • Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara and his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

The Golden Krishna Exhibition

  • Renowned Indian artist Krishn Kanhai unveiled his latest collection, “The Golden Krishna,” in a grand opening ceremony in Dubai.

Economy

GDP Grows 8.2%

  • India’s real GDP is estimated to grow by 8.2 percent in the Financial Year 2023-24 as compared to the growth rate of 7 percent registered in Financial Year 2022-23. 
  • According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, real GDP or GDP at constant prices is estimated to attain a level of over 173 lakh crore rupees in the year 2023-24.

RBI Brings back 100 Tonnes of Gold

  • Reserve bank of India brings back 100 tonnes of Gold from the Vault of UK to India. 
  • As of March 31, 2024, the total gold held by the Reserve Bank was 822.10 metric tonnes.

  • The world championships bronze medalist Nishant Dev became the first Indian male to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

  • Padma Shri Maguni Charan Kuanr passed away at his Keonjhar residence in Odisha.

Nelson Mandela Award

  • National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru has been awarded the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion for 2024 by the World Health Organization. 
  • Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion, established by WHO in 2019, recognizes individuals, institutions, governmental or non-governmental organizations that have demonstrated remarkable contributions to health promotion.

Scripps National Spelling Bee

  • Bruhat Soma, a seventh-grader, won the US National Spelling Bee champion title along with a Scripps Cup trophy and a USD 50,000 check after acing a 90-second spell-off against the second runner-up, 12-year-old Faizan Zaki from Texas. 
  • With this win, Soma has become the 28th Indian-American to hold the prestigious title.

Mass Communication Internship Programme

  • Ministry of Jal Shakti has announced a Mass Communication Internship Programme for students pursuing higher studies in this field in the country. 
  • The internship programme will provide an opportunity for selected candidates to work for the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

  • ASSOCHAM organized a roundtable discussion on ‘International Roundtable Conference on Effective Audit Committee: Enhancing Governance’ in New Delhi.

World No Tobacco Day

  • World No Tobacco Day is observed every year on 31 May.
  • Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education, launched an Implementation Manual of Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) at New Delhi in collaboration with Socio Economic and Educational Development Society (SEEDS).
  • India is the first country globally to regulate anti-tobacco warnings on streaming or OTT media platforms.
