Context
- President Smt. Draupadi Murmu presented the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 at an event organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
Key Points
- The theme of the year 2023 is 'Waste to Wealth',
- A total of 13 award winners were honoured under the categories of Cleanest City, Cleanest Cantonment, Safai Mitra Suraksha, Ganga Town and Best Performing State.
Cleanest city
- This year, two cities were jointly declared winners in the Cleanest City Award category.
- Surat also took the top honour this time along with Indore, before which Indore had held the top position alone for 6 consecutive years.
- Navi Mumbai of Maharashtra was at third place, Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh was at fourth place and Bhopal of Madhya Pradesh was at fifth place.
Best Performing States
- This time, in the category of clean states of the country, Maharashtra got first place, Madhya Pradesh got second place and Chhattisgarh got third place.
- Last time Madhya Pradesh was in first position.
Cities with population less than 1 lakh
- Saswad, Patan and Lonavala secured the top three positions in this category.
Cleanest Cantonment Board
- Mhow Cantonment Board of Madhya Pradesh was declared the cleanest Cantonment Board.
Cleanest Ganga Town
- Varanasi and Prayagraj won the top two awards among Cleanest Ganga Towns.
Safai Mitra Surakshit City
- Chandigarh received the Best Safai Mitra Surakshit City award.

- The theme of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle has been set for the Swachh Sarvekshan 2024.
