Green Development Pact -

Context:

  • NITI Aayog As mentioned in the G20 Leaders' Declaration, NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) organised a workshop on “Green Growth Pact (GDP) for a Sustainable Future” in India on 9 November.
  • The objective of this workshop is to facilitate discussions and actions related to implementing the Green Development Agenda in India in line with the G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration.

 Key Points:

About Green Development Pact-

  • Climate change is one of the most serious global challenges we face, requiring collaborative efforts and innovative solutions.
  • The G20 Summit 2023 focused primarily on climate issues, and an agreement called the Green Growth Pact for a Sustainable Future was signed on 9 September.
  • According to the Green Growth Pact (GDP), current and future generations can prosper only when current development and other policy choices and actions address environmentally sustainable practices and inclusive economic growth.

 Importance of Green Development Agreement-

  • This year has seen climate-related disasters in many parts of the world, from North America to Europe and Asia.
  • The year 2023 is also at the midpoint of the 2030 action agenda to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Coming out of the Covid pandemic, our path to development largely lies in the green and collaborative path.
  • India's G20 priorities include a "Green Growth Pact" with a roadmap of actions over the next decade to tackle the climate crisis and international cooperation on data for development.
