Context:

  • Recently, agricultural scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, famous as the father of Green Revolution in India, passed away at the age of 98.

 About Swaminathan ji -

  • Birth – August 7, 1925 (Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu)
  • Full Name: Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan

 Award :

  • For his outstanding contribution to agriculture, he was honoured as the first World Food Prize winner in the year 1987.
  • Apart from this, he has also been awarded Padma Shri (1967), Padma Bhushan (1972) and Padma Vibhushan (1989).
  • Along with this, he has also received various international honours including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1971) and the Albert Einstein World Science Award (1986).

 Work :

  • He served as the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
  • Apart from this, he also served as the independent Chairman of the Food and Agriculture Organization Council and played leadership roles in international conservation and agricultural organisations.

 Main Contribution:

  • Widely recognized for his important role in the Green Revolution in the 1960s and 70s, which was a transformative phase in Indian agriculture.
  • The Green Revolution significantly increased crop productivity and ensured food security for the nation.
  • For this, high yielding wheat and rice varieties, especially semi-dwarf wheat varieties, were developed by Swaminathan ji.
