"Mission Amrit Sarovar"

Why In News ?

  • Recently, the Ministry of Rural Development has provided information about the progress made in the implementation of "Mission Amrit Sarovar" launched with the aim of increasing water security in various areas.

Static 

  • Mission Amrit Sarovar was launched as part of India's "Amrit Mahotsav of Independence" celebrations on 75th year of Independence on April 24, 2022.
  • The mission aims to address the problem of water scarcity in rural areas and to construct/renovate at least 75 Amrit Sarovars in each district of India.
  • The goal of these water bodies is to ensure water sustainability at the local level.
  • Eight Central Ministries/Departments are actively involved in the implementation of the mission in this scheme.
  • These departments are Department of Rural Development, Department of Land Resources, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Department of Water Resources, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways.
  • Bhaskaracharya National Institute of Space Applications and Geo-informatics has been made the technical partner of the mission.
  • Out of more than 1 lakh Amrit Sarovars identified so far, work has started on more than 81,000 Amrit Sarovars.
  •   A total of more than 66,000 Amrit Sarovars have been constructed/renovated.
