Why In News ?

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed the BRICS Business Summit in Johannesburg.

Static 

  • The three-day BRICS summit is being held in Johannesburg under the chairmanship of South Africa.
  • The theme of the 15th BRICS Summit is BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development and Inclusive Multilateralism.
  • BRICS countries represent 42 per cent of the world's total population, 23 per cent of world GDP and 18 per cent of global trade.
  • BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
  • BRICS is not an international intergovernmental organization, nor is it established under any treaty.
  •   It can be called a unified platform of five countries.
  • Summits of the top leaders of BRICS countries and other ministerial conferences are held annually.
  • The BRICS Summit is presided over annually by the supreme leader of the member countries in the B-R-I-C-S order.
  • BRICS was discussed in a 2001 report by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O'Neill on the growth prospects for the economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China.
  • In 2006 the four countries began a regular informal diplomatic coordination with annual foreign ministers' meetings at the end of the UN General Assembly.
  • The first BRIC summit took place in Yekaterinburg, Russia in 2009 and discussed issues such as reforming the global financial system.
  • In December 2010, South Africa was invited to join BRIC and it came to be known as BRICS.
